Movies that Destroyed Celebrity Marriages
Mr.and Mrs. Smith: Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston
Brad Pitt couldn’t neglect his growing feelings towards actress Angelina Jolie anymore whom he met on the set of their movie “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” where they had the lead roles. This could have been an ideal love story if only Brad Pitt wasn’t married at the time. Pitt was married to Jennifer Aniston. At first, they denied the relationship rumors because of Jolie’s hesitance to pursue Pitt, considering his civil status. Jolie admitted that it took long for them to realize how significant the degree of their feelings for each other is. Months before the movie’s premiere, Aniston cited “irreconcilable differences” in her filing for her separation with Brad Pitt. Jolie was spotted with Pitt together with her adoptive son, Maddox on a vacation in Africa.
Daredevil: Jennifer Garner and Scott Foley
Both Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner were in a serious relationship when they began filming the “Daredevil” in 2002. Ben is engaged with Jennifer Lopez. Jennifer Garner is married to Scott Foley. But during the making of this film, Affleck and Garner fell in love with each other. Despite being in a relationship with their partners, it is in each other that they found love. Ben Affleck ended his engagement with Jennifer Lopez a year after the premiere of “Daredevil.” Two months after, Jennifer Garner broke up with her husband, Scott Foley. After the couple ended their relationships with their previous partners, they got married. Sadly, they still ended up separated after a decade of being together in marriage. Being married still doesn’t give you insurance that you will be together for a lifetime.
Titanic:James Cameron and Linda Hamilton
The movie “Titanic” chronicles the tale of two lovers whose story took place on a sinking ship. This sinking ship may have been a metaphor for the love story of the director of “Titanic,” James Cameron. The sinking ship serves as an eerie representation of his marriage with “Terminator” actress Linda Hamilton. The actress learned about her husband’s relationship with Suzy Amis while making “Titanic.” Soon, Hamilton left him. Cameron married Amis in 2000. After years of being separated from her ex-husband, Cameron shared in an interview that he was very busy with his movie and would rather stay with Suzy than go home to his wife. The positive side to this is that James Cameron remains married to Suzy Amis up to this day, which is an era in celebrity relationship terms. They probably have adequate home security which helped them build a strong foundation in their relationship.
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein:Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh
While playing the role of a married couple, Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson fell in love with each other. Years later, they decided to take another degree forward in their relationship and tie the knot. During their marriage, the couple was able to create movie masterpieces thanks to their excellent relationship. These movies were Much Ado About Nothing and Dead Again. These movies paved the way for them to be one of the most famous celebrity couples at the time. But their relationship started to get rough in 1994 during the making of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, where Branagh and actress Helena Bonham Carter felt an attraction and developed feelings for each other. After this, Emma Thompson was heartbroken and proceeded to separate from Branagh. But being the strong and loving woman she is, she found it in her heart to forgive him, and they remained friends until now. Both are now happily married with their new partners.
By the Sea: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
The story of how Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt developed feelings for each other and built a relationship is known to most people. They had a strong foundation for their relationship, which is their love. It conquered even the challenges and obstacles they had to face before finally being able to be in each other’s arms. The fans were so happy when the couple united in marriage. But, surprisingly, their relationship had gone down the drain eventually. It once sky-rocketed, but maybe what goes up must indeed come down. The “test” to their marriage happened during their 2015 movie By the Sea, which tells a story about a marriage’s disintegration. Though trying to understand the movie will, to some degree, make it seem like a documentary because Jolie filed for divorce a year after the movie was released.
Green Lantern:Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson
Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively were co-stars in the film Green Lantern. They never admitted that it was during the filming of this show that they fell in love, but it was pretty straightforward. During the filming of the said movie in New York City, they were spotted cozying up to each other. It was from there that their friendship blossomed into something more. It is undeniable, and they are given credit for being one of the most known Hollywood couples. But the problem is that Blake lively was dating Penn Badgley at the time, while Ryan Reynolds was married to Scarlett Johansson. After the film ended, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds broke with their respective partners. The couple then married in 2012.
Stage Beauty:Billy Crudup and Mary-Louise Parker
Mary-Louise Parker used to be the pregnant girlfriend of Billy Crudup. When Billy Crudup filmed “Stage Beauty,” he met his co-star Claire Danes, with whom he soon fell in love. Crudup left Parker, his girlfriend who was pregnant at that time so he could be with Claire Danes. Though Parker was shattered because of the sudden breakup, she still named her son after Billy’s father, William. After so many years, Parker detailed in her memoir “Dear Mr. You” her side on the issue. The book was an investment where she explained the heartbreak she experienced, how she handled her situation, and how she felt while going through all of it while she was pregnant. It was definitely a devastating episode in her life that she was thankfully able to get over.
Gigli: Jennifer Lopez and Cris Judd
At the time of the movie “Gigli,” Jennifer Lopez was married to her second husband, Cris Judd. The movie was given credit with a rating of 2.5 on IMDB, and one of the products that probably came out from the movie was her relationship with Ben Affleck. They had developed a romance while on the set of the movie Gigli. This relationship resulted in her leaving her husband at the time to continue a relationship with Ben Affleck. Lopez had lived a glamorous lifestyle, something that was the opposite of Affleck’s laidback one. The couple became engaged, but their relationship didn’t last that long. They had their wedding called off for reasons that remain unclear, but thankfully, Lopez was able to meet baseball star Alex Rodriguez, and they seem to be doing fine these days.
Pushing Tin: Billy Bob Thornton and Laura Dern
Movies seem to affect Angelina Jolie’s love life more than anything. Jolie was working with Billy Bob Thornton in the filming of Pushing Tin. It was an American comedy-drama film in 1999 that was directed by Mike Newell. Billy Bob Thornton was engaged to actress Laura Dern, and their engagement was very popular. However, Billy Bob left Laura heartbroken when she went home to find out that the fiancé she’s supposed to marry already married someone else behind her back — she even went on and described it as sudden death. Billy Bob seemed to have been mesmerized by Angelina Jolie so much, and to the degree that he ghosted his fiancé to marry the brunette bombshell. He married someone else without even telling his fiancé. Billy Bob didn’t even bother breaking up with Laura before marrying Jolie.
You, Me, and Dupree: Kate Hudson and Chris Robinson
Kate Hudson was married to Chris Robinson, the Black Crowes singer in the year 2000. In January 2004, they had a son. But children don’t give enough insurance that a marriage will stand firm. Things started to turn different for the couple. During the film, You, Me and Dupree, she met co-star Owen Wilson. The film was a comedy movie released in 2006. Hudson denied that there was an overlap between her relationships, but reports were speculating the exact opposite. She and Robinson separated a month after the film opened. Hudson’s marriage with Robinson lasted for six years, and they decided to end it in 2006, leaving each of them officially single. Though they are separated now, they share joint custody of their son. A month after, Hudson confirmed that she is dating Wilson. Hudson and Wilson’s relationship wasn’t so perfect, though, and they had somewhat of an on and off relationship.
Honey Boy: Shia Labeouf and Mia Goth
Shia LaBeouf is said to have married Mia Goth, a rising British-Canadian actress, in Las Vegas in 2016. But in Honey Boy, a film inspired by Shia LaBeouf’s life, he met the beautiful pop star FKA Twigs, who was featured in the film. From being love interests in the movie, the two turned to be love interests in real life, too. Because of this, LeBeouf ended his two-year marriage with Mia Goth. Later he entered into a relationship with Twigs but it only lasted for nine months. They said that they’d put their relationship on hold so FKA Twigs can fulfill her commitments to work. There were also speculations running around that their relationship had been rocky.
After two full years of separation, Shia LaBeouf and Mia Goth were seen wearing their wedding rings back on! Are they back together? They could use some help from a financial advisor for advice if they’re ever planning to get married again, considering the considerable amount of money they each have.
Star Wars: Harrison Ford and Mary Marquardt
Actor Harrison Ford married Mary Marquardt in 1964. Mary was a popular cheerleader back in college when she met Harrison. During their marriage, Mary was there to provide support for her husband in chasing his dream. He had always wanted a career that would showcase his acting skills. The couple was blessed with two sons. She was always there and supported him until his big break finally came.
Star Wars was one of the most successful movies in 1977. The movie brought Harrison Ford into the limelight, where he was cast as Han Solo. Ford was given a lot of credit because of his exemplary performance in the movie. But just after Ford became a movie superstar, his marriage with Mary Marquardt crumbled. The couple’s marriage lasted for 14 years and ended when Harrison got involved with his Star Wars co-star Carrie Fisher.
Mind Over Murder:Tori Spelling and Charlie Shahnaian; Dean Mc Dermott and Mary Jo Eustace
Mind Over Murder was a Lifetime TV movie back in 2005. The movie was said to be responsible for the destruction of two marriages. Dean McDermott and Tori Spelling were co-actors who developed a romantic relationship on the first day of the set. Spelling was married to Charlie Shahnaian for over a year at the time. On the other hand, McDermott was married to Mary Jo Eustace for more than a decade and they had a child together. Both Spelling and McDermott broke off their marriages and later married each other in 2006. Spelling wrote in her memoir in 2009 that meeting McDermott was love at first sight and that she didn’t regret it though she knew she was married. For her, McDermott was worth the investment.
Snow White and The Huntsman: Liberty Ross and Rupert Sanders
There had been speculation that the director of Snow White and the Huntsman, Rupert Sanders, was having something romantic going on with the show’s lead star Kristen Stewart, who was in a relationship with Robert Pattinson, her Twilight co-star, at the time. This reportedly broke off the Twilight stars’ relationship and the whole affair was the talk of the town.
Rupert Sanders, during that time, was married to Liberty Ross. When Ross found out about it, she felt betrayed, but she chose to stand strong for her children. Their marriage was also broken off due to what happened. Stewart’s relationship with Sanders can take credit for not only destroying the former’s relationship with Robert Pattinson but also for ruining Liberty Ross and Sanders’ marriage. Though Rupert Sanders eventually started a relationship with Stewart, it did not last long and they broke up in 2013.
The Last Face: Sean Penn and Charlize Theron
The couple Sean Penn and Charlize Theron became engaged in 2014, and in the same year, they started filming The Last Face. The Last Face was an American drama film in 2016 directed by Sean Penn and was written by Erin Dignam — the film was, to some degree, successful. The stars of the film were Charlie Theron, Javier Bardem, Adele Exarchopoulus, and Jean Reno. The relationship of the couple became too rocky while they were producing the movie. The couple then parted ways a year after shooting of the movie ended. The reason behind their breakup is not known since the couple didn’t really clarify what happened and gave the “it-didn’t-workout” line to people instead. Their marriage ended in 2010.
Made in America: Ted Danson and Cassandra Coates
Producer Cassandra Coates was Ted Danson’s second wife. Danson was married for eleven years to Coates, then he met actress Whoopie Goldberg. He met her in 1988 on the set of The Arsenio Hall Show. Though they met in 1988, they only became romantically involved in 1992 while filming Made in America. Their romance on screen was, to a huge degree, so intense that they developed an off-screen relationship. This became the talk of Hollywood at the time, and it resulted in Coates and Danson’s break up in 1993. Ted Danson found love in Whoopie Goldberg despite all the judgments that their relationship received. They don’t care about what people have said about them, and none of the criticisms mattered to their relationship. To them, what was important was their love for each other — which didn’t last either.
Northern Lights: Eddie Cibrian and Brandi Glanville; Rimes and Dean Sheremet
Northern Lights is one of those movies that causes marriages to end. It is a television film released in 2009 that was directed by Mike Robe. The show was where Eddie Cibrian and LeAnn Rimes — the stars of the film — met and fell in love. At the start of the film, both were married to each of their partners. Cibrian was married to American television personality Brandi Glanville while Rimes had been married to her former backup dancer Dean Sheremet for seven years. The relationship between Cibrian and Rimes on set was what caused their separation from their respective spouses — it was, of course, made successful with their attorney’s help. Eddie Cibrian married LeAnn Rimes in 2011 and they have been living together ever since. LeAnn Rimes is the stepmother of Cibrian’s two sons with Brandi Glanville. The couple remains married to this day.
Dream House: Daniel Craig and Satsuki Mitchell
Dream House was a 2011 thriller directed by Jim Sheridan. The film was said to be the reason behind the splitting up of two relationships. Actress Rachel Weisz fell in love with her co-star Daniel Craig during filming. Both had a seemingly undeniable attraction towards each other. They were already paired together before but were not famous then, so no one suspected love to blossom between them at the time. During the said movie, Rachel was married to Darren Aronofsky, an American filmmaker, and screenwriter. Daniel Craig, on the other hand, was engaged to Satsuki Mitchell. Neither party admitted that the film was the reason for their respective breakups, but it was pretty obvious. After the film ended, the couple went public shortly. They married seven months later, probably without needing any personal loans since they had a lot of money to spend.
House of Wax: Chad Michael Murray and Sophia Bush; Paris Hilton and Nick Carter
Paris Hilton was the girlfriend of Nick Carter during the filming of House of Wax. House of Wax is a film that Jaume Collet-Serra directed in 2005, where Chad Michael starred together with Paris Hilton and others. However, Nick, Paris’ boyfriend, announced on a radio show hosted by Ryan Seacrest that his girlfriend and Murray had something going on between them. Michael, at the time, was married to One Tree Hill star Sophia Bush. When this knowledge became public, Murray and Bush, who have only been married for five months, ended their marriage.
Bush defended her separation with Chad Michael Murray and said that she and Chad, to some degree, were just two stupid kids who had no business being in a relationship in the first place.
Cleopatra: Richard Burton and Sybil Williams; Elizabeth Taylor and Eddie Fisher
Actor Richard Burton starred in the film Cleopatra together with actress Elizabeth Taylor in 1961. Richard and Elizabeth hated each other initially, but they eventually started to feel sparks between them when they had their first-ever kiss on set. This would have been a love story straight out of a fairytale had they both been single. But during filming for the movie, Richard Burton was married to Sybil Williams while Elizabeth Taylor was married to Eddie Fisher.
Both separated from their spouses two years later. Burton married Taylor, and their marriage was dubbed “the marriage of the century.” They were married for ten years. However, the spark they once had wasn’t insurance for a long-lasting marriage. The couple also separated only to remarry a year and a half later and eventually separate again.
To Have and Have Not: Humphrey Bogart and Mayo Methot
To Have and Have Not was an American film in 1944 that covered romance, war, and adventure. It was a film directed by Howard Hawks and was, to Hawks’ credit, recognized as one of his best films.
Humphrey Bogart was married to actress Mayo Methot, whom Oregonians hailed as the youngest leading lady in the world. During the time the movie was filmed, Bogart was still married to Methot, but found himself mesmerized by the young Lauren Bacall. Well, this led Bogart to break up with his wife.
After his separation with Methot, he married Bacall. Later, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall became one of the most famous couples in the history of movies. Though they had a huge age difference — 25 years — this did not hinder their relationship from having a strong foundation. The young Lauren Bacall decided to put her career on hold because of her love for the actor, and she decided to focus on their relationship so it won’t become another failed marriage. They stayed together until Bogart’s death in 1957.
The Rum Diary: Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis
The Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp was in a relationship with Vanessa Paradis, a French singer, actress, and model for fourteen years. The couple had two children; one of whom is the young actress Lily-Rose Depp. Sadly, things started to take a turn for the worse when Depp starred in the movie The Rum Diary.
The Rum Diary was a comedy-drama film in 2011 written by Bruce Robinson, where Johnny Depp and Amber Heard were one of the stars. Romance eventually grew between them. Depp separated from Vanessa. Depp described his break up with Vanessa as “very painful” and said that he abused alcohol to try to numb the pain he was feeling. He shared that he didn’t want his wife and children sad and that his kids gave him a sense of purpose and love. Johnny Depp married Amber Heard shortly after — but it, to some degree, turned out to be a very hellish marriage.
Gone Girl: Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner
Gone Girl was an American psychological thriller film that was directed by David Fincher. The film was a success. It grossed millions of dollars and became Fincher’s highest-grossing film, which no doubt increased his credit score. Ben Affleck was the star of the movie, and he reportedly requested that the producers give Emily Ratajkowski the role she eventually played in the film. The scenes in the movie were so true-to-life. Because Ben personally requested for Emily, rumors had been going around that there was something romantic between them. Affleck, at the time, was married to actress Jennifer Garner, whom he had at one point been in a movie with. Jennifer and Affleck decided to separate in 2017, fueled by rumors that their marriage was not working out. They have three children together.
Proof of Life: Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid
The actress Meg Ryan was said to be molded for romantic comedies back in the 90s. However, this changed quickly because of a movie. Proof of Life is a 2000 kidnapping thriller. The film was directed and produced by Taylor Hackford, and its screenplay was written by Tony Gilroy. Ryan and Russell Crowe met just ahead of Proof of Life’s filming earlier that year. The film is remembered today because of the things it revealed between Ryan and Crowe. This film can take credit for destroying the girl next door image of Ryan, and it also paved the way for her separation from Dennis Quaid in 2001. What remained good about their previous marriage is their son, whom they share custody of.
Rosemary’s Baby: Mia Farrow and Frank Sinatra
Mia Farrow, at 21 years old, was married to Frank Sinatra in 1966. But a movie caused their marriage to be rocky. Frank was an American actor, singer, producer, and one of the best-selling music artists of all time. Indeed, Sinatra’s credit report at the time was astronomical. Farrow had always been dedicated to her acting career, but her husband Sinatra wanted her to give it all up, and she agreed to him. She spent her time accompanying him in his work. She eventually got tired of it and got a role in the horror film Rosemary’s Baby (1968). However, Sinatra cast Mia Farrow in his film The Detective the same year. Farrow fell behind schedule, which annoyed Sinatra, so he replaced her with another actress. This resulted in the couple breaking up.
Even after their separation, they stayed close friends until Sinatra died.
Layer Cake: Sienna Miller and Jude Law
Jude Law became engaged to his Alfie co-star Sienna Miller. People saw their relationship as perfect. But in reality, that was not the case. Just because a relationship looks perfect, doesn’t mean that’s already insurance it will last long. The seemingly perfect couple actually had problems in making their relationship be coordinated. Law had a romantic relationship with his children’s nanny. The couple wasn’t able to save what they have and they eventually separated in 2006. There were rumors swirling around that it wasn’t the nanny that caused problems for the two and that the trouble actually started because of the film Layer Cake. Miller apparently had a relationship with her Layer Cake co-star Daniel Craig while she was engaged to Law. According to reports, Miller and Law rekindled their relationship in 2009 and spent time together with Law’s children. Years after, they once again announced their split.
Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis and Carroll: Marilyn Manson and Dita Von Teese
Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll is a psychological horror film. It was written and directed by rock star Marilyn Manson and was said to be the reason for Manson and Dita Von Teese’s separation. It was filmed but got abandoned — but the film became famous nevertheless because of this widely spread rumor. The couple was married for almost five years since 2005, but during the production of the film, Manson was involved with one of his actresses, Evan Rachel Wood. This led to Von Teese and Manson separating. Manson got into a relationship with Wood and they were even engaged to be married, but for some reason, they broke up seven months later. Despite what had happened between Von Teese and Manson, they seem to be, to their credit, perfectly fine and are on good terms with each other right now.
Dangerous Liaisons: John Malkovich and Glenne Headly
The film Dangerous Liaisons is a romantic drama film that was released in 1988. The film was directed by Stephen Frears. The said film won three Oscar awards and was even nominated for another four. The movie received many positive reviews which must have given them a high credit score. Actor John Malkovich met his co-actor, Michelle Pfieffer, on the set of the film, and they had developed a romantic relationship. John Malkovich was a rising star back then. Sadly, the film cost John Malkovich’s marriage to Glenne Headly. After six years of being together, he and his wife ended their marriage. But Malkovich’s relationship with Pfeiffer didn’t become successful, either, and ended up failing. Later, actress Michelle Pfieffer married David E. Kelly while John Malkovich married Nicoletta Peyran, his long-term girlfriend.
Planet Terror: Robert Rodriguez and Elizabeth Avellán
For sixteen years director Robert Rodriguez had a happy marriage together with his wife, producer Elizabeth Avellán. The couple had five children during their marriage. But their relationship became rocky during the production of the film Planet Terror, a film that Rodriguez directed. The film was an American horror comedy set in the year 2007. It starred the actress Rose McGowan, whom the director hand-picked. McGowan fell in love with Rodriguez. Robert broke up with his wife and got into a relationship with McGowan. Their relationship turned out to be awful, however, and to some degree hellish for the actress. She didn’t want to be with the director anymore because of reasons that are unknown to this day. Thankfully, they finally ended their relationship in 2009.
The Last Picture Show: Peter Bogdanovich and Polly Platt
Bogdanovich was happily married to Polly Platt for nine years. They had two children during their marriage. To some degree, things suddenly took a turn for the worst when he cast the then 21-year old Cybill Shepherd in his film The Last Picture Show. The Last Picture Show was an American drama film in the year 1971 that was directed by Peter Bogdanovich. Bogdanovich fell in love with Cybill, which cost him his marriage to Platt. He was smitten by the actress that he eventually went into a relationship with her. Peter Bogdanovich and Shepherd dated for about seven years from 1971 to 1978. Though they dated for years, they were never married. The reason behind this was never revealed.
The Getaway: Ali MacGraw and Robert Evans
Ali MacGraw is an American actress who got married to producer Robert Evans in 1969. They got separated in 1972. The very public relationship she had with her co-actor on the set of The Getaway, Steve McQueen, was reportedly what caused the break up with her husband. The film Getaway was an American action thriller that was directed by Sam Peckinpah. Ali and McQueen married in 1973. The couple had initial chemistry. However, it wasn’t enough to sustain them with happiness throughout their marriage. They stayed together for five years before they decided to break it off in 1978. A source said that MacGraw was McQueen’s one true love — and, to his credit, he stayed madly in love with her until the day he died.
Stromboli: Ingrid Bergman and Petter Lindstrom
Ingrid Bergman is a Swedish actress who had been married to Petter Lindstrom, a Swedish Surgeon. They were married before the filming of Stromboli even began. They have been married for thirteen years. During filming, Ingrid got involved with the Italian film director, Roberto Rossellini. Not so long after the film’s release, Bergman and Linstrom broke up, and she married Rossellini. Ingrid got pregnant and gave birth to a boy the same month the film was released. So they had a son before they got married and they had their twin daughters after their marriage, which should have been more reason for them to have planned their home finances. Their marriage eventually ended because Rossellini had a relationship with Sonali Das Gupta, a screenwriter.
